This initiation is greatly prized, and sought after in India and Tibet in particular. Originally, before the advent of modern day TV, and the open door policy we now enjoy on the spiritual level globally through the miracle known as the Internet, spirituality was a secretive process which only a few entertained in their lives.

The way it worked in the olden days is that if you were a “Spiritual Aspirant”, and were seeking internal knowingness through Self Realization, that you would first have to find a qualified teacher who him/herself has already crossed that bridge. After finding a suitable Enlightened Yogi or Yogini (female Yogi), you would have to plead with them to take you on as a student.

They usually only took one or two students in their lifetime, and these students would have had to prove their worthiness and fortitude first by being declined many times before they were actually allowed to even enter the Ashram (spiritual temple/school). There have been some famous stories of spiritual aspirants who had to wait outside of the temple gates for up to three years before they were deemed worthy to begin spiritual tutelage (this was a tool used to break down their Ego, and make them more open to receive).

You would then usually have to give-up your family completely, and move-in, and live with the teacher and his family for perhaps 20 or more years, doing chores, serving the teacher and his family, and performing spiritually, emotionally, mentally and physically arduous, and often painful practices for several hours each day. Your Ego consciousness was constantly being tested to see if you were humble, and pure hearted enough. All this was just to merely qualify to receive Kundalini Shaktipat Initiation. That's how cherished it was.

Originally, kundalini shaktipat initiation was given without charge by tradition. After all, you have to become part of the family to even be considered as a possible recipient in the first place.

Paramahansa Yogananda

In the 1960's Kundalini Shaktipat Initiation was openly brought to the United States for the first time by the great Hindu Saint Paramahansa Yogananda, author of the famous book “Autobiography of a Yogi” (required reading for anyone who is serious about their spiritual path). His Master was Lord Kriya Babaji Nagaraj, and he was a part of the now world famous "Lord Kriya Babaji Nagaraj and the 18 Siddha Lineage".

It was the first taste of Eastern spirituality, and culture in the West. It was also the very first time that a Yogi had openly offered Kundalini Shaktipat to the public without preceding trials, and tribulations.

He was the first of three famous Yogis to bring this type of spiritual initiation to the west in the 1960's. The other two were; the renowned Swami Muktananda, who was the head of the Siddha Yoga System in the world, and also the renowned Shri Dhyanyogi Madhusudandas, who was the head of the Kundalini Maha Yoga System in the world.

After realizing the great potential in the United States, and the extreme wealth as compared to India, they began to charge a nominal fee for the reception of Shaktipat. They used this money to help people in need in many charitable ways, both in their native India, and elsewhere in the world wherever there was a need.

Over the years the price of Shaktipat has risen to several hundred American dollars, but there are still very few saints, and spiritual teachers in the world who offer this rare gift of Shaktipat Initiation

Yona received the "Kriya Babaji Nagaraj and the 18 Siddhas Lineage Kundalini Shaktipat Initiation" from two Yogis originating in Singapore on Friday September 22, 2006 . Navaratri began Saturday, September 23 and ended Sunday, October 01. A very spiritually powerful nine days within each calendar year. Navaratri is a nine day festival that honors Hindu Goddesses.

Along with the Shaktipat Initiation he also received the new spiritual name "Yona Jyotiananda", and later he received Authorization from one of the Yogis known simply as Amma, to offer "Kriya Babaji Nagaraj and the 18 Siddhas Lineage Kundalini Shaktipat Initiation", and also "Kriya Babaji and the 18 Siddhas Lineage Spiritual Healing". Kriya Babaji Nagaraj was only 16 Years old when he was already so spiritually advanced that he was able to transmute his physical body into pure spiritual energy. He walked the Earth in his physical form some 1,500 years ago. They call him the "Deathless Yogi" because he regularly re-appears in his physical form for devout spiritual practitioners ever since, and he materializes in his physical form every 12 years during the largest gathering of Humans on the planet called the Maha Kumbha Mela in India.

The Kumbha Mela (the Urn Festival) is a Hindu Pilgrimage that occurs four times every twelve years, and rotates between four locations: Prayag, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik. Each twelve-year cycle includes one Maha Kumbha Mela (Great Kumbha Mela) at Prayag, which is attended by millions of people, making it the largest gathering anywhere in the world.

Yona was also Initiated by another Great Saint (pictured above) by the name of Sad Guru Sant Keshavadasji. He recognized Yona from previous life times immediately upon meeting him. This Sad Guru gave the name "Sada Shiva" to Yona.

This saint went to India with several students, and they meditated in the exact same cave which Kriya Babaji was said to have meditated in 1,500 years earlier. It is the cave where he eventually de-materialized from, in the Himalayan Mountains. Babaji actually re-materialized for them.

Yona spoke to more than one person that went on that trip, and they all saw this extremely auspicious event. Sad Guru Sant Keshavadasji entered into Maha Samadhi (leaving the body consciously) in 1997 during a program he was giving in India. He was so aware that at a specific point within the program he abruptly threw-up his arms, and simultaneously riveted his gaze at the sky, and yelled-out "Narayana" ! Just like that, he collapsed. Narayana is the name of the highest form of the Creator. When God is always on your mind during your life, he is also the last thing on your lips at the end of it. He will be extremely missed by millions around the world.

It was actually impossible for Yona to be anywhere in close proximity of this blessed being without having the urge to cry. "It was as if you were standing in front of God Himself".

Once, he actually stopped in the middle of a public program to initiate Yona into the "Sacred Thread Ceremony". This is the initiation into Brahma-hood (priesthood). He stated to the crowd that "Sada Shiva (Yona) has been yearning for this sacred initiation for several lifetimes, and Guruji was not going to keep him waiting any longer". After the ceremony, he placed the sacred thread around Yona's head and touched the top of his forehead. Yona immediately lapsed into an unfathomably deep state of Samadhi (enlightened state of consciousness).

On another occasion he communicated with Yona telepathically for three straight days. He loved to play these sort of spiritual games using his "Siddhis" (spiritual abilities) with his disciples. It made them yearn for Enlightenment even more because they were excited that these sort things are actually real.

Yona Jyotiananda's was first Spiritually Initiated into the "Kriya Babaji Nagarj and the 18 Siddhas Kriya Yoga System" in 1995 by his first Enlightened Hatha Yoga Master Marshall Govindan Satchidananda.

Marshall Govindan Satchidananda is the President of "Babaji’s Kriya Yoga Order of Acharyas", and a disciple of Babaji Nagaraj, the famed Himalayan master, and originator of Kriya Yoga, as well as his late disciple, Yogi S.A.A. Ramaiah, (1923-2006).

M. G. Satchidananda has practiced Babaji's Kriya Yoga intensively since 1969. He studied and practiced Kriya Yoga in India for five years with Yogi S.A.A. Ramaiah, assisting him in the establishment of 23 yoga centers around the world during an 18 year period as a dedicated. During this period he practiced Kriya Yoga for eight hours per day on average, and as a result attained Self-Realization.

While in India he studied the Tamil language, and the works of the Tamil Yoga Siddhas. In 1980 he assisted in the collection and publication of the complete writings of Siddhar Boganathar in Tamil. In 1988 he was asked by Babaji Nagaraj, the founder of Kriya Yoga to begin teaching. In 1991, he wrote the best selling book, "Babaji and the 18 Siddha Kriya Yoga Tradition", now published in 11 languages. In 1992 he founded Babaji's Kriya Yoga Ashram on a beautiful 80 acre mountain top site in St. Etienne de Bolton, Quebec.

He offers classes, seminars and retreats there year round. In 1993, he edited and published the first international English translation of “Tirumandiram: a Classic of Yoga and Tantra.”

In 1995 he retired from a 25 year career as an economist, and later a systems auditor to devote himself full time to teaching, and publishing in the field of Yoga. Since 1992, he has traveled extensively throughout the world guiding about many Kriya Yoga study groups in over 20 countries, ashrams in Canada and Bangalore, India, and a lay order of teachers of Kriya Yoga: Babaji's Kriya Yoga Order of Acharyas, a non-profit educational charity, incorporated in the USA, Canada and India. Since 1989 he has personally initiated over 10,000 persons in Babaji's Kriya Yoga in a series of intensive sessions and retreats.

In October 1999 he was blessed with the darshan of Babaji Nagaraj near his ashram in Badrinath, Himalayas. In 2003, he was again blessed with His darshan, at Val d’Aosta, in the Italian Alps, and given the name “Satchidananda.”

From 2000 to 2001, he completed the writing of, and publication of “Kriya Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and the Siddhas,” in several European languages. Since 2000, he has co-sponsored with Dr. Georg Feuerstein, Ph.D., a team of scholars in a large scale research project engaged in the preservation, transcription, translation and publication of the whole of the literature related to the Yoga of the 18 Siddhas

Their Yoga Siddha Research Centre, in Chennai, has produced six major publications during this period related to the Yoga Siddhas. A new translation with commentary of the “Tirumandiram” is currently being prepared in nine volumes by the team.

He is a graduate of Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
